Englewood, Co, USA: Mobile TV Group, one of the United States’ foremost providers of broadcast production services, has purchased a Leader LV5490 4K test instrument for its recently completed 39 Flex 4K production vehicle. A purpose-built 4K UHD HDR double expando, the 39 Flex is fully equipped to handle live acquisition of sports and stage events and can process live feeds from up to 14 cameras in full 4K/ultra-high- definition and high dynamic range. The vehicle is 53 feet long, 13 feet 3 inches high and 8 feet 6 inches in width, expanding to 16 feet in width when on site.

“We tested out multiple options and found the LV5490 to be the best in terms of func- tionality and form factor,” comments Dale Canino, director of technology at Mobile TV Group. “UHD enhances the viewing experience compared with HD, provided the tech- nical parameters are optimally adjusted throughout the signal chain. The Leader LV5490 is being used in a variety of roles, including line-up of the various camera channels. Our engineering staff appreciate the instrument’s ability to measure and display precise luma, color-component and composite waveforms plus the vec- torscope. The CINELITE and CINEZONE functions are also useful in ensuring accurate exposure settings. Setting the signal levels accurately during the initial shoot ensures that we can retain the full 4K quality overhead right through the production chain. We are also leveraging the LV5490’s ability to handle high dynamic range and wide color gamut.

Mobile TV Group ( provides mobile unit services to the net- works that telecast the games of about 50% of all NBA, NHL, and MLB teams. In re- cent years MTVG has added an increasing number of national events, college sports and some entertainment events, totaling over 4,000 events annually.

With 27 high definition mobile units plus auxiliary units, MTVG is able to base its facili- ties, engineers, and drivers all over the USA. It effectively provides local service to the regional networks and to visiting national networks. The combination of engineers, event coordinators, and drivers makes TV production easy.

One of Mobile TV Group’s newest mobile units, the 39 Flex made history when it was used at the first-ever live 4K UHD broadcast in the United States, covering the Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club for CBS. The production served as the inau- gural live event on the new DirecTV 4K Channel. More recent 39 Flex deployments have included 4K UHD coverage of a concerts, college football, and mixed martial arts.

Occupying a half-rack-width by 4U high housing, the Leader LV5490 offers 4K, UHD, 3G, HD and SD test and measurement features in a compact portable unit. Waveform, vector, five-bar and picture display can all be viewed at the same time on the LV5490’s 9 inch LCD monitor. The monitor is full 1920 x 1080 HD resolution with a wide viewing angle and high color reproduction.

A 1920 x 1080 HD DVI and HD-SDI rasterized output is also provided to feed a larger monitor. Simultaneous viewing of up to four SDI inputs is possible, including overlays. The size and location of individual channels can be adjusted on the display using a  USB mouse so the user is not limited to fixed-size quadrants.

A five-bar display mode converts SDI signals into five cyan bar-graphs providing si- multaneous display of maximum and minimum luminance, red-component, green- component, blue-component and composite levels. Gamut errors are displayed as red excursions beyond the legal thresholds.

Leader’s CINELITE II toolset (comprising CINELITE and CINEZONE) also comes as a standard feature, allowing easy assessment of relative exposure and overall luminance during production. A Focus Assist option allows highly accurate on-set adjustment of camera focus to match the 4K format’s ability to handle very precise image detail.

The LV5490 can also be controlled remotely using standard KVM tools. Additional op- tions for the LV5490 include eye pattern with jitter measurements, digital audio I/O, Dolby decode, focus assist, CIE color chart and 12G-SDI.
