Press information from LEADER Electronics Corporation
For immediate release

Yokohama, Japan, December 10, 2015: LEADER Electronics Corporation, a globally active producer of high-grade test and measurement equipment for the broadcast industry, announces that it will support the ASPEN protocol in future products.

This decision forms part of LEADER’s commitment to ensure that its hardware and software solutions conform to the IP-based data-exchange formats increasingly being used in the broadcast television, radio and professional audio markets.

ASPEN (Adaptive Sample Picture ENcapsulation) has been developed as a collaborative effort by Evertz and many other leading broadcast industry organisations to meet the real-world requirements of an IP-centric facility while implementing proven MPEG2 transport streams. It offers a robust format for encapsulating uncompressed UHD/3G/HD/SD over MPEG-2 transport streams. With 10GbE (and higher) network interfaces now commodity items, the transport of uncompressed video becomes a reality.

The encapsulation method is documented in SMPTE RDD-37. By transmitting the video, AES audio and all metadata elements as individual streams, the unused data space of SDI is never transported; only the elements required by the application.

MPEG-2 transport streams are already widely used today to transport compressed formats such as MPEG-2, H.264, HEVC, and JPEG2000. MPEG-2 transports streams are carried over DVB-ASI or IP, typically at either 270 megabits per second (DVB-ASI) or via 1 gigabit per second Ethernet using SMPTE ST 2022-2. ASPEN completes the transport of video by defining uncompressed SD, HD, 3G and Ultra HD formats.

When combined with existing SMPTE standards such as SMPTE ST 302 (audio), SMPTE ST 2038 (ancillary data) and the SMPTE 2022 family of IP standards, ASPEN provides broadcasters with a flexible method of transporting video, audio, and data over scalable IP networks.

ASPEN’s ultra low latency with independent video, audio and ancillary data flows is also ideal for use in production environments and workflows.
